Welcome!
About Me
Hi, I’m Sarah Mugford (she/they), a licensed professional clinical counselor in California. If you often feel overwhelmed by strong emotions, struggle to feel understood, or are navigating your identity, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to go through it alone. My passion is helping individuals and couples work through emotional challenges, develop healthy coping strategies, and build lives that feel authentic and fulfilling.
Therapy with me is a partnership. I believe in your inner resilience and strength, and my role is to help you uncover and harness them. Whether you're seeking support for your personal journey, your relationships, or your mental health, I create a space where your goals and values are at the center of our work together.
My Approach & Experience
I specialize in working with adults who experience intense emotions, complex trauma, identity exploration, and relational struggles. My experience includes:
Dual-diagnosis residential treatment
Outpatient therapy for teens and families
Substance use treatment for women and caregivers
Private practice therapy for adults with diverse mental health needs
I earned my B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from National University in 2016 and completed my Master’s in Counseling there in 2019. My background also includes volunteer work, teaching assistance, and caregiving for aging family members, all of which shape my compassionate and intersectional approach to therapy.
Who I Am
I identify as a white settler, cisgender female, asexual/pan-romantic, straight-passing, and invisibly disabled. Growing up in a working-class environment in Chula Vista, California, I understand firsthand the impact of systemic challenges and personal adversity. My lived experience—including navigating domestic violence, childhood trauma, Complex PTSD (CPTSD), Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), anxiety, and depression—deeply informs my work and my commitment to advocacy, social justice, and creating an affirming space for all.
Outside the Therapy Room
When I’m not working or learning (which I genuinely love), I’m advocating for political and social change, diving into a good book, or spending time with animals. I also believe deeply in the mind-body connection—so you’ll often find me reflecting, healing, and growing (likely with a cup of coffee or matcha in hand).
Let’s Begin Your Journey
Healing is possible, and you don’t have to do it alone. If you're ready to explore, grow, and create lasting change, I would be honored to support you. Let’s take this step together.
